Photographed at the light athletics tournament in Berlin, on the Grunewald sports field. Athletes from "Bar Kochba" and "Blau Weiss" took part.
Rolf Helmut Werthen was born in 1909 in Berlin. He was an athlete and sports coach in the "Bar-Kochba" club. In April 1935 he took part in the Maccabia in Eretz Israel (Mandatory Palestine), and competed in the 1,500m and 10,000m events. Werthen was single. According to the Page of Testimony submitted in his memory by his cousin, Dr. Hans, Eilling, Werther was murdered, presumably during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, together with his parents, Ignatz and Helena.
This photograph forms part of the Herbert Sonnenfeld Collection, a photographic documentation of prewar Jewish life in Germany.

Ingeborg Mello was born in Germany and received her training in the "Juedische Sportgemeinschaft 33" in Berlin. In 1938, at the age of 19, Mello emigrated from Germany to Argentina. She became one of the most prominent female athletes in the country, dominating in shot-put, discus and javelin.
Generally, Jews from Germany in Argentina were deemed to be "enemy aliens" and could not acquire Argentinean citizenship but an exception was made so that she would be able to represent her adopted country in international sporting events.
She represented Argentina at both the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympic Games.
